As you kick your way into a new year, here are three ways to increase your chances of being successful with your 2020 resolutions:
1. Take a different approach.
Do you find yourself setting similar resolutions at the beginning of every year? If so, how successful have you been with your goals? If you’re not really seeing results, but you keep setting the same resolutions, then now is a great time to try a different approach.
For example, let’s say you resolve to lose weight or get fit. Consider what you’ve tried in the past and figure out what worked and what didn’t. Then, break the yearly cycle of no results by approaching your resolution in a completely new way.
2. Be clear and specific.
Another way to increase your chances of success with your resolutions is through specificity. Let’s use the same examples of “lose weight” and “get fit.” While these are admirable goals that show you want to improve your health, the tough part is they are too vague. How much weight do you want to lose? What does “fit” look like to you?
To have a fighting chance at changing your habits, be clear and specific with your resolutions and goals. Instead of “lose weight,” consider shifting your focus to building a consistent workout habit. Something like, “Go to three martial arts classes each week.” This resolution is specific enough because you have a way to gauge your progress and success.
3. Take small steps.
If you’ve been training martial arts for a while, then you’re probably well aware that improving your skills is a marathon, not a sprint. Not only do you have to be patient, but you also have to be realistic with how much you can handle in your practice. Resolutions are the same way. If your goal is to get better at martial arts or improve your fitness, you must be patient and take small steps toward your goal. Expecting a change to happen overnight just isn’t realistic. But when you take a long-term goal and break it down into smaller steps, you’re more likely to see your progress happen over time.
